GATED
Tabitha Weddell

EXHIBITION
EXHIBITION
Made specifically for the show using clay taken from construction sites in Peckham; the gate stands in the space with a quiet fragility underpinning its monumental presence. The ceramic parts are reminiscent of a wind chime, and contain the fragments of marbles from Wedell's childhood bedroom, adding to the swirling nostalgia of the piece.
It looms ahead like the entrance to something sacred and forbidden; and beckons you towards it with a latched finger.
Through representing something sturdy and protective in such brittle materiality, Wedell begs questions around the nature of safety; offense and defence; fear and imagination.
The lumpy and rounded shapes hark back to childhood memory, illustrated story books, and add an air of possibility to the work.
This show specific work opens up towards a path of inquiry into our own sense of imaginative fear; and the metaphorical gates and swords we craft for ourselves I because of it.

WORKSHOP
WORKSHOP
12.08.2025
Atendees started with a slab of clay to carve their shape into - creating their mould. Tabitha then poured the molten pewter into their mould where they where then able to take their charm home
Metal casting can seem intimidating to get to grips with - especially when you don’t have the initial materials + equipment needed. This workshop was a great introductory to metal casting, an opportunity for learning a new skill, making a Christmas gift or your own personal luck charm

About the Artist
Tabitha is a sculptor living and working in South London. Within her practice their approach is sustainability conscious - this has led her to digging and foraging her own wild clay, and using plant, shell, bone and other organic matter to create ash glazes.
Tabitha has taken part in the Kunstkollectiviet Denmark residency where they built a kiln from scratch and has shown in the 2023 Winter Sculpture Park : London’s largest independent sculpture park.
Alongside their personal practice Tabitha co-runs a ‘not for profit’ project called Communal Clay where the aim is making clay and sculpture more inclusive and accessible to everyone. They are currently running a series of workshops with Artblock within South London Gallery.
They have facilitated clay based workshops across south London. The workshops aim to help people improve peoples mental health, build supportive relationships with peers and facilitate personal growth and encourage play and tactility through the act of making with clay as a primary material.
